Bringing 39 years experience to the Birmingham contingent at Wilkswood Reggae 2018, Scientist Sound continues to be a leading player on the international reggae circuit. Formed in Sparkbrook in 1979, Scientist Sound consists of core members Roy P, Nicky Dread, Robbo Dread, Gorgan Brown, Kojack and Desi Roots. The Scientists believe that soundystems are an art and Roy P is constantly designing and building the cabinets and Nicky designs the electronics and building the pre-amplification to drive the speakers of their turntable-based sound system.
The first Scientist Soundsystem was built for Robbo’s school disco. Roy P and Nicky, his brothers, helped create an embryo sound system that was fore-runner to the first 8-bin set up that outperformed the systems of the day in Birmingham and other UK cities. “Scientist Sound ‘killed’ them all: a BAD little sound”, Robbo recalls. “In 1977 I got a chance to actually witness first-hand many soundsystems from across Birmingham by attending Monday night Youth Club sessions at Claremount Road. Those from Birmingham alone included Hital Hi Fl, King Iwa, Bismark, Count Niya, Tremor, Niya Esquire, Jah Massigan, Quaker City, Duke Wally and particularly Zion Sound and Mafia Tone with whom I served my apprenticeship.”
Scientist play sounds such as the great Jungle Man, Jah Massegan, Black Roots and Jah Shaka and rate the dancehall era of King Jammy’s as influential on their sound. Prince Jamo/Black Rose regularly performs with the sound system on tour alongside Josef Lalibella and Peter Culture.
