Lee Scratch Perry & Mad Professor headline Wilkswood Reggae 2018!
Divine dub duo announced for Sunday night double-header on the main stage.
Get set for a double dose of dub dynamics at this year’s Wilkswood Reggae Festival when the legendary Lee Scratch Perry and the pioneering Mad Professor go head-to-head on Sunday night, July 22nd 2018. The two enormously influential and consistently excellent producers have been confirmed for the main stage to play out this year’s festival held annually at Wilkswood Farm in Langton Matravers, Dorset.
It’s hard to know quite where to begin when introducing Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry; the word ‘legend’ is often over-used but in his case it almost doesn’t do him justice. The Jamaican dub adventurer has worked with Bob Marley and the Wailers (he arguably kickstarted Bob Marley’s career), the Heptones, The Congos, Junior Murvin (they co-wrote the seminal ‘Police & Thieves’), Sly & Robbie, Adrian Sherwood, the Beastie Boys, the Orb and the Clash amongst many, many others.
Now aged 82, Perry has racked up countless recordings as both artist and producer (a conservative count lists over 60 albums) and his eccentric genius has permeated musical genres way beyond the world of reggae. His 1960s and 70s studio productions were decades ahead of their time and it’s fair to say that the Godfather of Dub’s incalculable influence is still reverberating through genres from hip-hop to grime to dubstep.
Mad Professor will also need little introduction to reggae fans; his uniquely celestial productions and remixes are widely regarded as being instrumental in transitioning dub into the digital age. He’ll also need no introducing to Wilkswood Reggae Festival-goers as it’s his second appearance on the main stage; his ‘shed-shaking’ appearance at last year’s Wilkswood festival almost literally brought the roof down and any lovers of bass-heavy, experimental, electronic dub would be foolish to miss his performance.
The Prof has worked with reggae artists such as Sly and Robbie, Pato Banton, Jah Shaka and Horace Andy, as well as artists outside the realm of traditional reggae and dub such as Sade, Massive Attack, the Orb, and Jamiroquai. He is a long-time collaborator with Lee Scratch Perry and, as well as releasing ten albums together, the pair are entrancing and bewitching live. As with any event featuring the two dub legends, it will be a night to say “I was there!”
